Lead shrinks, but Ravens still get big victory

Lead shrinks, but Ravens still get big victory

When a team plays not to lose, it usually loses. The Ravenna Ravens (2-1) nearly did just that Friday against Canton South (2-1), but held on to gain its first victory in four tries over the Wildcats, 31-28. "Yes it was a win, but not as we would like to achieve it," said Ravenna coach Jim Lunardi...

Letter to coach Lunardi
Coach Lunardi,

Coach Walling and I just want to say thanks for taking time out of your day to talk football with us.  We had a blast!  Your staff and players are all class; we really appreciate you showing us around and giving us a chance to learn from your crew.  Your staff and players believe so much in what you have built; the energy and pride they share was evident the whole visit.  We left with a ton of great stuff to talk about, which is exactly what we wanted.  Hopefully, our programs will continue to support each other throughout our careers.  We'll be in touch.  Have a great season!

Sincerely,

Coach Hartmann and Coach Walling

The effect Blayre Davis can have on a football game was summed up with the second-half kickoff Friday night. Trying to keep the ball away from the speedy Ravenna senior, Streetsboro went through four kicks and two kickers before successfully getting the ball in play.

Tough to question the Rockets’ strategy, what with the night the Ravens tailback was having.

Davis ran for 141 yards and a touchdown, caught a pass for 17 yards, threw for a touchdown and set up another with a 56-yard run. That was just in the second quarter of Ravenna’s 34-7 nonleague victory over host Streetsboro at Glinatsis Stadium.

The immediate goal of many high school football teams is to win games and conference championships.

In a wider view, however, the wish of any coach is that his players develop both on and off the field as they turn their attention to life after high school.

To both ends, it's safe to consider the 2007 Ravenna Ravens football team a resounding success.

An 8-3 season record -- combined with a Portage Trail Conference Metro Division championship -- ensured the Ravens were a success on the field, but it's in the astounding number of athletes who will be furthering their education next year where head coach Jim Lunardi takes the most pride.

Autumn is characterized by changing leaves, chilled temperatures and brilliant colors that offer fleeting, picturesque landscapes. In many communities across the country, high school football on a crisp Friday evening is an indelible component of those scenes.

Similar to other interscholastic activities, high school football offers its participants unique educational opportunities. During those select few evenings, the student-athletes, pep bands and cheerleaders can showcase their talents on a grand stage.
